The mega environmental
development project initiated
and launched by the School Development
Society
Royal College the
islands premier seat of primary
and secondary education with a
167 year long history is no more
the centre of education for the
affluent.
The College premises spreading
over an extent of 38 acres accommodates
8000 students of all communities
and of all walks of life catering
to multifaceted academic needs
and 26 sports, 56 clubs and societies.
It is no easy task for this colossus
institution and its surrounding
environment to be maintained at
the highest expected level especially
being a Government School.
It is also an obvious fact that
the institution has been compelled
to face several environmental
hazards not of its our making
but created by other unavoidable
circumstances.
The
situation itself is the main reason.
The adjacence of the College premises
to the Old Race Course which has
undergone unplanned and adhoc
land development and the raising
and reclamation of roads round
the College, not taking the damaging
effects on adjacent lands has
resulted in the College land being
inundated and temporarily becoming
soggy marsh even after normal
rainfall. This situation is further
worsened due to the absence of
a surface drain system to cope
up with rainwater system to cope
up with rainwater collection and
a smoothly, functioning garbage
disposal system. This situation
can be overcome only with the
continuous support and understanding
of the Colombo Municipal Council.
Although short-term environment
cleaning programmes were held
the situation still needed long-term
remedies. Thus the Royal College
School Development Society has
embarked on the first ever mega
project on environment protection
called "Rajakeeya Suparisara"
with the strong and invaluable
assistance of Royal College Union
and the Colombo Municipal Council.
His Worship the Colombo Mayor
Visited the College on 7th September
accompanied by the other Councilors,
illustrated the key role the Municipal
Council has to play for the betterment
and welfare of the College.
